LinuxQuestions.org - Redhat 8.0 user desktop corrupt

Not sure how to describe this so I'll do it the long way...

Have a Redhat 8.0 machine for developing a website using PHP and MySQL. Three users are defined to the system -
Root
jim
fred.

Everything has been just fine, server is serving pages, PHP is working great, blah, blah, blah..

Last Friday I (jim) downloaded and installed an evaluation copy of MyManager (looking to simplify backup and restore processes for DB)

Got the package to work (signed on as jim), and discovered that I needed to make sure that the folder that I was backingup the database to had the proper authority. Did that and backup worked fine. Logged off of the system and went home.....

Had a great weekend and then on Monday a.m., I sign on to the machine as jim and it looks as if some "child" or real ignorant user went nuts trying to configure the desktop (Gnome). Boxes of some type are everywhere, no text appears next to selections, launch panel at the bottom is gone and the icons have changed.

Anyway, I see alot of boxes with the international "Do Not Enter" symbol. Bottom line - The desktop is corrupt. I can launch some applications, but don't see what the applications is, it's just a guess. It's really wierd......

Can't find the shutdown, logout, to save my sole so I need to power off to try to signon as another user.

If I delete the user jim and the group jim, and then re-boot and then re-add jim, the desktop is still corrupt.

I haven't a clue. PLEASE HELP.

The other two users (root and fred) are just fine. Their desktops are just like I left them on Friday.
