Redhat 8.0 newbie with strange post install in 3 questions
In Redhat 8.0, my scanner was not probed. What commands would I use to correct this or do I have to unplug the device and reboot? The scanner is an Epson 640U. Also, I think there is a bug in the GUI of KDE. I try to set my screensaver and the "apply" tab does not "grey out" and the box does not close on its own. So no screensaver. Tests fine. Not to mention the fact that my cursor is erratic; changing from the (resize to the pointer). Do I have to wait for a fix or report the bug? And the last question: I'm seeing a "failure" in the shutdown processes of the lpd spool of my Epson 880 printer. It appears 3 times and I cannot print............................
Sorry for this jumbled mess but I wanted to save so many threads.

You may need to give a bit more info before you get replies.
Like.....is the scanner USB, scsi, or parrallel.
Is the printer USB or parrallel.
What are your hardware specs?
Did you install the "sane" package?....or what software are you using for your scanner?

As you have other USB devices in your list of specs, I'll assume your kernel has USB compiled or your USB module loads and works.
Try these if you haven't come across them yet.
From the cammand-line or in a terminal window;
"man sane"
"man sane-usb"
"man sane-find-scanner"
"man sane-epson"
I'm no authority on USB (I avoid it like the plague cos my hardware is older stuff), hoping some knowledgeable person will jump in now.
Kde does have system sounds, that should have been enabled by default.
Try enabling them via system settings.
You have a few issues with X (which would be enough to make me re-install), but I tend to run Mandrake 9 now and don't fire up RedHat much, so I'll boot into RedHat and see what I can nut out.
C'mon guys....feel free to jump in....

Hmmmm....the only way I can reproduce your sceensaver problem is to run X as root......which should not be done.

Any other suggestions? Feel free to dive in, anybody! I have 3 separate incidents. I would like to stick with Redhat 8.0. Thanks!

Ok, the screensaver prob is definately a bug in RH 8.0, you need to copy the screensaver files to your home directory manually. I can't remember where exactly offhand, but it has been dealt with in this forum before.
Search the forum with "redhat 8 kde screensaver" or something similar and it should come up with the post to fix it.
Ok here it is: read this post to fix your screensaver

Managed to fix the screensaver problem with the "kdelibs" package update from the Redhat site. Now it seems my K-panel is corrupted because I can't access the theme managers or navigate menus. I had this same problem with gnome desktop and solved that problem by downloading the pythongnome files.
