Redhat 8.0 and Conexant PCI modem

Hi all
How do I find what speed my modem is capable of or is actually working at? I'm running Redhat 8.0 and using KPPP to dial in to my ISP via a Conexant PCI modem (chipset RS56-PCI). If I look at the connection details (from the connection icon on the panel) it tells me - Connected at 57600 - I Click on Details and at the bottom of the GUI that comes up I see 0.0(max.8.0)kb/sec.
The reason for my asking this is the drivers I originally loaded for the modem were from Linuxant.com and are a trial version limited to 14.4Kbps. I have since tried to load another driver, an RPM package, by right clicking on the .rpm file and selcting Install Packages. Didn't get any prompts or dialogs to say that the rpm was loading, so don't know if the modem is using the new driver or the original.

Any help would much appreciated.
Thanks
Peter
