redhat 7.3 rebuilding kernel

hey guys, I am about to do a kernel rebuild (getting brave) but all of the documentation I gather says I need a source code compiler or something like that. How do I know if I already have one installed / where can I get one if I don't. Thanks in advance!

You should have a compiler installed. Type

gcc -v

That should tell you the version. If that doesn't work then let me know.

nope seemed to work. Came back with a version and all. Thank a bunch! I'll let ya know how it goes. If I don't respond, it went bad :)

You shouldn't have a problem, just follow the instructions and if you have any questions just ask. Make sure you name your new kernel something different than your current kernel, so that you can just add a new entry to your bootloader, and at boot time you have a choice of which kernel to use. This works good in case there is something wrong with your new kernel, you can revert to the old one and startover again.

Good Luck!

Thanks, I think I found a pretty good step by step that includes keeping the existing kernel in case anything just dies. I am gonna do it today. Thanks a lot!

I tried to connect to www.kernel.org, but no luck. Site go down? If so, where can I download kernels besides from there? I went to google and did a search but no where I could actually download the binaries, lots of documentation though. ty

It was down earlier, but it's up and running now. I just checked.
