redhat 7.0 to FC2/Debian?
 

One of the DNS servers at work is a beautiful machine, that has been up and functional for over 2 years straight. There are some security concerns, as the box is running redhat 7.0 with BIND 8.2.2. There are enough exploits for both the OS and that version of BIND that we feel we should upgrade it.

I've done a bit of research, and I see alot of questions and comments about moving rh8 or rh9 to fc1 or 2, but this would be even larger, coming from 2 generations previous (counting 7.3 as a generation). Ideally we'd do a major upgrade to either FC2 or the latest stable Debian, and upgrade BIND to the newest stable version. The system specs are enough to handle either distro, so this isn't one of the, "can my system handle X distro" questions, it is more like, "can an upgrade of this scale still leave the box functional?"

I'm guessing all will go well, there is no funny hardware issues involved, but I'd like to get some opinions. Is it safe to make so major of a jump in one shot, or should it be done piecemeal - Say to rh9, then fc2, or maybe build the new BIND prior to the upgrade, maybe even get the kernel up to 2.6.6, then upgrade the OS?

what if you just update the packages you need instad of updating the whole system???

you konw the rule: newer touch a running system....

my suggestion is, if you sleel what to update the whole system, make a backup of the whole and try it, if it doesn't work, try to make a new istall and copy only the config files of the server/service you are running. and if this doesn't work, then just rerun you'r old box...

you could copy the whole HHD (all the partitions) to another one and keep it safe.
