Question Red Hat: Print jobs stay queued in /var/spool/lp

My machine is a Visara Thin Client running Red Hat Linux 7.0 (Guinness).
Kernel is 2.2.18 on an i586.

What is happening is that we are sending jobs over the network to the machine to print to a locally attached printer.

The machine's printcap file currently states:
*****************************************
BRIDAL:lp=/dev/lp0:sd=/var/spool/BRIDAL:sh:
lp:lp=/dev/lp0:sd=/var/spool/lp:sh:
m412prt:lp=/dev/lp0:sd=/var/spool/m412prt:sh:
*****************************************

There are well over 50 jobs queued up in /var/spool/lp,

Normally the LPD would recognize that there are jobs there queued up and send them to the locally attached printer on lp0, however, that is not the case.

After a couple of print requests, the LPD will pick up one of the queued reports and send it on its way, but the currently requested print job will go to the bottom of the queue.

I am not sure how to troubleshoot the LPD.

If there is anyone out there that could point me to getting these jobs to print and stop queueing, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Do you have a script in /etc/init.d that starts/stops lpd? If so have you tried running that script for example:

/etc/init.d/lpd stop

/etc/init.d/lpd start

Sometimes just restarting the daemon helps.

jlightner - Thank you very much, the daemon restart worked.

I never knew about the scripts.

I navigated to /etc/init.d followed by issuing a "./lpd restart" and all jobs went to the local printer.

Thanks again.
