What are minimum and recommended hardware requirement for installing red hat 9.

Those specs should be moderate but then RH9 should definitely NOT be installed anymore. It is outdated - the equivalent of windows 3.1 or earlier! You should consider getting something more up to date; if you insist on using a RH based distro, that would be Fedora 9 or CentOS 5.

Unless you have at least 1GB of RAM and a decent CPU, it would be better to install to bare metal rather than in a vm.

Actually, Red Hat 9 was released in 2003, so it is not like "installing Windows 3.1 or earlier" since RH9 was actually released after Windows XP was released (late 2001)!

Not that I disagree with jay, you should go for a more recent distro, such as Fedora. RH9 will probably not support most of your hardware as well as the most recent Fedora (consumer fork of Red Hat), or any other recent distro will.

Yes, and like windows 3.1, it is totally unsupported. XP still is supported so it is not equivalent. Even win2000 and even win95 are still supported (although only for big customers with $$$$$ service contracts).
