Red Hat Laptop Crashing like WIN95

My Red Hat 7.3 laptop was fine until I did two things that, as far as I know, shouldn't have any affect. I downloaded the new redhat-supplied kernel, and the latest version of my wireless driver set.
Those things may have nothing to do with my problem. It may just be a coincidence.

Now my laptop freezes up after 20 minutes to 3 hours of use. My Caps-Lock and Scroll-Lock LEDs flash, and I can't even CTRL-ALT-F2 to get another console.

I don't think that it's a hardware problem because nothing is wrong when I boot to WinXP, but I found the following in /var/log/messages whenever it crashes:

Code:
Jun  8 22:17:36 prometheus kernel: hdb: status error: status=0x00 { }
Jun 8 22:17:36 prometheus kernel: ide-scsi: Strange, packet command initiated yet DRQ isn't asserted
/dev/hdb is my cd-rw/dvd-rom it's a
CD-RW/DVD-ROM CRX810E, ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM drive
and is recognized and works fine when I use it.

What could be going on?

I forgot to mention that I asked a very knowledgible friend about this. He suggested upgrading to RedHat 9. This is normally his way of saying that he doesn't have time to help me, but I did it anyway. The problem persisted with the upgrade.
