Unhappy Red Hat 9 - HP 1300 printer install problems

Hello everybody,

I'm really new to Linux (2 days...) and new on this forum!

Here is the problem :

I installed Red Hat 9 on my PII 400 Mhz, with 256 Mo RAM and a Geforce3. Everything went well (quite everything at least... ) but now I want to install my HP Laserjet 1300 which is on my XP Pro computer (on my home network). I use the "assistant" to do this, Red Hat seems to find my XP and the printer share, but then, when I need to install the correct driver, I find no driver for the Laserjet 1300...

I went on HP.com, but there are no drivers (old M$ reaction...) for Linux. Then I went on linuxprinting.com and I found some .ppd file for the HP 1300. But now's the problem...what should I do with this file???? On the site, they talk about CUPS and Foomatic, but all of this is a bit confusing for my disturbed M$ brain...

can someone help me?

thank you very much!

Another thing (1) : When I start Red Hat, just after the log in page, I have this message : "Could not lookup for internet address for dhcppc2. This will prevent GNOME from operating correctly. It may be possible to correct the problem by adding dhcppc2 to the file /etc/hosts.". My computer (DHCPPC2) is DHCP client, the address is good when I check it and I checked the hosts file but I don't know what to add, because in this file you can only add static mappings (if it's like in M$ ). How can I prevent this message? And how can I change the name of my computer?

Another thing (2) : how do I access...hum...the floppy drive...hum...please?

I find no driver for the Laserjet 1300...

see if using the driver closest to it will work, it does for me, you would want to use, the 1200 series. It will work, surely.

yes, add the computer, its IP address and hostname to the /etc/hosts file, this will eliminate any DNS errors and such, since you dont have a DNS server running on your LAN.
example below.
127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost
#192.168.1.100 lanhost.localdomain lanhost
#192.168.1.101 lanhost.localdomain lanhost
#192.168.1.102 lanhost.localdomain lanhost

replace the IP numbers and the lanhost.blahdomain with your computers name and IP on the LAN. and also do not use the #'s like in the example.

Also to access the floppy drive, from the command line, put in a fat floppy.
type 'mount -t vfat /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy'
and press enter.

In a window manager, it should be on the desktop or in one of the menus.
If you have any questions someone can clarify.
