Red Hat 9.0 installation..
 

:Pengy: :study: Iam completeley new to Linux . thats the reason why i need som help...
the last weekend i was triying to install redhat 9 on my brand new comp. I bought also more memory and a second hrd drive...
Im using the 3 iso files wich i downloaded from redhat.com .... the installation goes perfecly..the problem starts when the intallation ask me fo the 2nd CD.. ..So i replaced the cd and when de process is almost donde (only 91 mb to be copied)..i got thi message: "CANNOT MOUNT CD ROM"
if i press CTRL-ALT F4 i have this: "unable to find a file or directoty.......
i have tried the whole processs more than five times and still the same problem..... what can i do???
i have redownloaded the iso..

Since im 100% newbie..please.. feel free to asnswer me at dumb level...

It is entirely possible that your download was corrupted.
Did you run the md 5 checksum program on the iso's?

If they don't match... it is usually because there was some problem with a corrupted file... probably the one you are missing.

try redownloading the second ISO from another ftp server... and RUN the md five "check software" option when it is offered to you...

linux is a GREAT system but don't get in a hurry.
You are going to learn how to program your own computer, if you don't already know how... you WILL be glad you did.

I have Redhat 9 on my pc and it is great.

I tried all the other types and Redhat was the best/easiest for me.

Alot of ppl will knock you for using linux with a gui, but if you are like me and work in IT all day the last thing you want to do is start programming all over again when you get home.

check the ISO you have before downloading the ISO again.
also make sure that your CD-ROM is clean. I had problems install my RH9 and it was because I have a dirty lense.

Serg, I had the same issue with disk 2 during install. I created a new second disk from the iso and the problem happened again but this time after a different amount of data had been copied.
I reformated my Linux partion with different partitioning software and then tried to re-install with great sucess.
I am a newbie as well so I am not sure if this is an issue with RH9 or not. Hope this helps.

My Solution
Download again the iso images
Install directly form the hard disk

how can i install from the hard disk???

1- put the three iso images into one partition you can access from linux (I use a Fat32).
2.- Boot the computer from your CDROM 1 *
3.- In the first screen look for Help (I think is the F2 key)
4.- Follow the instructios to install ASKING THE METHOD
5.- Choose install from a hard disk
6.- The only problem is that you don't have the graphic mode. You must install in text mode. But whith a bit of attention to the questions , it can go...
For me worked fine and I am not an expert in computers.

Red Hat is the best an speedy way to enter the linux word...

I suppose you know how to find and count the partitions...

hda5/yourdirectorywhiththeimages/
hd= hard disk
a = primary master
5 = first fat32 partition.

All this can change according with your machine.

If get confused, ask how or, better, look to the documentation in the RH home page.

** If you can not boot from the CD, make a boot floppy following the instructions from RedHat home page

At the beginning of a Redhat install, the install process allows you to do a CD check. Run that on all your install CDs which will verify if the CD is corrupt or not.

I ran that...... lol :D
 

It said my disc 2 and 3 were bad, and yet I managed to install everything I needed from them.

Not sure what the check does but its not always going to spot a bad CD.

I just installed Red Hat 9.0 and didn't have a problem. First I would suggest to go and get a book on Red Hat 9.0 that comes with the install CD's. The book is very handy especially if you run in the terminal( you can't possibly remember all the code). I also manually partitioned having the default for the boot partition, using twice the RAM for the swap partition, and using the rest free space for the / partition. Hopes this helps.
