Red Hat 7.2 KDE Oddity

:Pengy:
I have just recently made the full hardcore switch to Red Hat 7.2 after having fun 6.2 over the past year as part of a dual boot system with Windoze98. While I do enjoy the many refinements of 7.2 and am comfortable with my switch, I have run into a strange situation.

I have no KDE panel! Everything runs fine, and every so often, one will appear, but when I try to use the panel, it disappears again, thought the desktop menu still remains!!!!

It first happened on my "regular" user account, but it didnt happen in my root account so I didn't mind. But now, after attempting to change the style to marble on the root Deskop the same thing has happened!!

Help! I cant find it in my RedHat Bible, my O-reilly's Running Linux, or the KDE help pages!!

If anyone can help it would be much appreciated!!:smash:

Firstly, the KDE that ships with 7.2 is probably 2.2.1 which is a buggy release anyhow. (any release that ends with an odd number is well... odd lol)

So grab 2.2.2 or whatever the latest ones are and install it.
Get all the rpms for RedHat and then drop the the console and cd into the dir you put all the files and issue:

rpm -Uvh *.rpm --replacefiles --replacepkgs --nodeps

i found thats the only command that works for a situation like this.

If you opt for getting KDE 2.2.2 use up2date feature in RH, just register your system on RH network, run first rhn_register (all done as root), and then up2date, it'll get you all the packages for KDE and install them.
