recovering root username
 

Hi,

I've been given the job of running a RH9 linux server at work, I have a normal user login account, but don't know the root username - the guy who used to do this has left and probably thought it was funny not to leave any admin details!

How do I get the root username? (I know the password because I guessed it while accessing GNOME user settings)

I'm a total newbie, so no flames pleeeaasse! (and yes, it is ironic that they've given it to someone who knows nothing, but that is the corporate world...)

u r confusing me(nubee). u've got the root password. should not the user name be just "root"?
If in gui app, user name does not ask then you can use user/group editor from the gui with root passwd to do anything, isn't it?

Ha ha - yes, the root username is root! How silly I am to not have tried that...

Thanks people, I'd heard that Linux users were grumpy flamers, but not a flame in sight! It truly is the Windoze users with the chips on their shoulders!!!!

The easist way is to boot, if using lilo type single at prompt, or if using grub hit 'e' for edit and edit the line that starts vmlinuz, put a 1 at the end for single user mode.
When booted to the prompt type passwd root, change it to what you want and reboot.
