Wink Recovering Data after Vista Crash

Dell Laptop running 32-bit Vista Home Premium SP2
After crash, have not been able to advance beyond clean install option without losing all data on HD. Puppy Linux to the rescue. About to boot from CD. Any suggestions/recommendations/hints before I start install to assist data recovery? Responses are much appreciated.

You don't need to install anything. Use a live CD like "system rescue CD" or "recovery is possible".

Cheers,
