Recover deleted files ext4 home directory

Oh my gosh I'm an idiot. I have recently started using KDevelop as an editor for my websites and tonight I was playing around with using it properly with projects and whatnot. So I go Project > New and I insert the directory my files are currently in, it evens says 'there are files currently in here'. So I click proceed thinking it would automatically add the files to the project and just after I clicked I thought 'I should create a backup before I do this.' Well, too late, I've already clicked and KDevelop just wiped the folder.

Being a geek I calmly went on Google on my other computer and searched for linux undelete tools. I found 'testdisk' which I have tried using via an Ubunutu Live CD I have (12.04) but it sees the deleted directory I want, just no files in it.

Help me please, is there any other way? It's an entire (not small) website I've been developing and was ready to create a backup (I know, I should do it every night but I haven't been).

extundelete is a utility that can recover deleted files from an ext3 or ext4 partition.

Well, it doesn't compile on Ubuntu 12.04 but I found ext4magic while trying to solve that. I managed to get half my files back and I don't think I'll be able to recover anymore.

Thanks for the help.

You're not an idiot. If it did not explicitely stated that files would be wiped / deleted, I would have done the same. Time to log a 'bug' report stating that there are 'idiots' that don't understand KDevelop's warnings and that they should make them more explicite.

PS If your issue is solved, please mark the thread like that using the thread tools just above the first post.

I'm still an idiot, Wim. I've been using computers enough (and had this happen enough) to back my stuff up frequently. The annoying thing is I was doing this to add all the files to a git repository for backup...

I'll post a bug report as you say, it's a good idea. Forgot about [SOLVED] in all my panic.
