Recompile Print Driver

Hi Guys,

Just a quick question. Is it possible to recompile a print driver to use on a Linux system.

IE: I have an old HP PCS 1410 which only come with drivers for Windows. (back when i still used Microsoft)

I have checked the open printing website www.openprinting.org but was not able to find a driver for my particular printer.

I am wanting to install the printer in Ubuntu 12.04 and have had no luck using the CUPS setup interface.

Any adivse would be great,

Thank you.
Marios

OK, just a quick update.

In the past i have only tried to install the HP printer as a network printer connected to a Windows 7 Professional machine and NOT directly attached via USB

I decide to attach the USB on my local Ubuntu laptop this morning and found that Ubuntu configured the printer and i was able to print successfully. Thank you.

I will test the other features such as scanning and see how that goes while being locally attached.

I will also try to install the printer as a network printer while being attached to my wife's desktop PC which is running Windows 7 Professional. (If this is impossible please let me know)

Thank again guys

It should be possible. Via cups it will be identified as a samba printer with a URI smb://windows_IP/Printer_share_name.
