Unhappy Recommends for cf install?

Frustrated Noob...

Mission, replace the OS on a Hitachi Visonplate ('02 Midori) with something I can actually use. (Side mission, extract the touch screen driver and use in new OS...if possible.)

Using a separate computer for file transfer. I'm trying to do a hard drive install of DSL 4.4.10 from CD onto a 4 gig 133x cf card via an IDE adapter.)

Installation completes, but when I reboot I either get a hang or a grub error. (Error 17.) no success in lilo, grub or hd install.

I've also used win image to load from the iso and boot image onto the cf card.

What am I doing wrong?

1. Would I have more success buying a usb adapter and doing a pen drive install?

2. Is there another distro I should try for this purpose?

Thanks!

J

O.K.

I found Puppy Linux yesterday evening. Puppy has a wizard for installing to a cf card in an IDE slot. I got that part done within 2 minutes of starting for the first time.

Any Ideas on how to find a touch screen driver on an installed version?
Once found, how would I move just the driver into the new OS?
