Recommended method to install Gentoo
 

I have got Gentoo 2006.1 (64 bit version) on a Live INstaller CD. I have heard about gentoo that it can be installed in a way that is ideal for the particular system it is installed on. That it offers great flexibility and is very configurable. I would like to know how do I go about doing this. I want to learn installing it from the command line....fom compiling the whole thing...kernel and stuff. Im seriously interested. I am using opensuse 10.2 now, and have removed winxp from my system. But installing suse was no big deal really...couldnt really understand the 'real' linux.

that'd be a stage 1 install, which is the lognest most tuned way to install gentoo. just start at gentoo.org and read the installation guide for a stage 1.

Personally, when I first Installed Gentoo I used the Minimal CD (Around 50Mb for AMD64) and followed the instructions here http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handboo...?part=1&chap=1

The install process is all command line from start to finish, and I ended up doing a stage3 install. It worked pretty well, so I never did a complete build from source.

In my experience the best way to install is to follow the handbook. One of the cool new things is you can boot to the LiveCD and follow it from there.

Plus the LiveCD will help in hardware detection.
