Recently Upgraded Linux, now its not working

I recently upgraded my Linux partition, and now when I boot up it does nothing. It tells me

"Starting up...
Loading, please wait..."

then goes to a black screen and does nothing. The version of Linux I am running is:

Ubuntu 8.04.4 LTS, kernel 2.6.24-28-generic

What did I do wrong? Anyone know how to help?

When you say you upgraded your Linux partition, does that mean you upgraded the Linux operating system, or does that mean you changed the partition structure (as in resizing the partition)?

My next question is, how did you go about upgrading Ubunut 8.04? Support for that version of Ubunut ended in May of this year.

Finally, I offer this comment: it might be better for you if you used a liveCD to make a backup of your personal files onto external media, then download a newer version of Ubunut and make a clean install.

Interesting - the second 8.04 LTS upgrade problem reported in a week.
I wonder if it really was an upgrade (or just an update) - 2.6.24 would still be Hardy (8.04).

As per above, we need more infor from the OP.

I was using the Update manager, i.e. the GUI and did not do this operation from the command line. There was an option at the top to Upgrade, separate from updating. I believe that I upgraded the operating system, it was not a partition resize.

If I log in using recovery mode, I think I should be able to backup my files. I will try that, and do a clean reinstall of Ubuntu.

Thanks

Try selecting an older kernel (i.e. a smaller number than 2.6.24-28) from the GRUB boot manager screen.

If GRUB is hidden then I think the key to press was Esc back in 8.04.
