Unhappy Receiving Messages from 'root' Account

Hello, everyone!

I am trying KBiff with GKrellM, instead of Coolmail, so I am close to a solution to my problem described in a separate topic in these forums.

When I configured SuSE Linux 8.2 Professional initially, I set it to receive messages from the 'root' account. I am trying to accomplish that goal with KBiff and KGrellM, but I would very much appreciate advice from people who have set up an account to read messages from the 'root' account. (I have 26 "new" messages, all of which are from the 'root' account.)

KBiff is displaying two errors, one right after the other, repeatedly. The first message is: "Error opening /var/spool/mail/ddickerson. Either this is not a valid maildir or you don't have sufficient access permissions." After I click OK, I get the message, "Cannot open folder /var/spool/mail/ddickerson."

The "Meta Info" for this folder (file?) is as follows:

> Type: Email Message
> Size: 42.9 KB
> Modified: 2003-06-10 13:27
> Owner: ddickerson - users
> Permissions: -rwxr-xr-x
> From: root@linux.local (root)
> To: root@linux.local
> Subject: SuSEconfig: openssl-notify
> Date: Sat, 17 May 2003 18:46:50 -0500
> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii

As you can see, the system is configured for the 'root' account to send messages to itself, not to me ('ddickerson@linux.local'). I have done extensive searching on the Web and I have no idea how to resolve this problem.

In addition, I fear that the file or folder, 'ddickerson', is corrupted or in the wrong format. I am repeatedly getting the errors from KBiff.

Does anyone have any suggestions at all? I would be extremely grateful and I thank you very much, in advance!

Cordially,

David

I'm not really sure what you are trying to do, but if this is right, then I hope it helps you.

If all you want to do is collect the system messages that are sent to root by the various different processes, you could change your aliases file (/etc) and set your email address to be the one that receives root's mail.

If that isn't what you want to do (you just want to access root's mail folder and not have its mail mixed up with your personal account, I would also go for the pine option as aherm suggests.

I think the problem you have is about permissions. You look like you may have configured up your mail client to poll both your own and roots mailboxes. I think (and if I am wrong - someone will correct me) that you would not be able to poll that local mailbox unless you were the user.

By opening up a terminal when logged into your own acocunt (in Xwindows) and logging in as root, you could leave pine open and check it as and when you want.

This is how I do it.

Best of luck
