Ok - so where is the problem? Is it that you are expecting a GUI login screen?
If so, log in at the prompt there, then as root try running `init 5`. If that works we can change the default runlevel to 5 in /etc/inittab. If it doesn't work, do `ls /etc/init.d/*dm*` and see what is there: gdm? kdm? xdm? Then do: `/etc/init.d/gdm restart` (or kdm or xdm) as root and see if it works, or what errors it throws.
"One of the updates failed to install." also needs to be expanded on. What failed to install, exactly? One of the log files in /var/log should be an update log you can look at if you've forgotten. Maybe zypper.log (I rarely use Suse and could tell you for sure if it was Debian or RHEL-based).
