Realtek 8185, Wireless doesn't work. I just installed Suse 10.3
 

Hello guys.
I'm trying to switch to Linux and first of all learn how to use it.

I have a Gateway MT3707 that came with Windows Vista.

I installed Suse 10.3 and was installed pretty quick, and did a dual boot so I can use Windows and Suse.

The problem is that my Wireless Card, Realtek 8185 is not working at all, and the sound card too.

I know that the wireless card is a realtek 8185, because at the back of the laptop has a sticker that has the model and brand.

I've been browsing over the Internet and seems that I need to use the windows driver using ndiswrapper.

I just have BASIC BASIC linux skills, or maybe I can say, no skills, so I read i need to install ndiswrapper and then run the win xp driver.


Can someone help me step by step as I am really lost in the terminal, i don't know how to execute this file to install it or how this works.

ndiswrapper package is included in SUSE distributions, I believe. You should check Suse documentations for installation instructions specific to your distribution. There should be an .rpm package available.

The generic ndiswrapper instructions are pretty good as well:

Basically you (probably) need to install the package, compile it, load it into your kernel. You also need to get the latest Windows drivers for your wireless NIC because that is what ndiswrapper uses. The ndiswrapper docs cover how to do this.

You'll need to do all this from the command line as root, either logged in as root, or using sudo.

The wireless NICs are not quite plug and play in Linux yet. But it can be done - hang in there.

ok i know how to get now as root, but how do I do all this things u say I need to do?
I don't have too much knowledge on Linux

It will be MUCH simpler if you can connect to the Internet with a wired connection while you get ndiswrapper set up. You need to go the ndiswrapper web site and read the documentation. Then you need to go to the SUSE website and learn how to install packages in general and ndiswrapper in particular. But first maybe you need to read some basic documentation on working from the command line, etc.

Wireless can be one of the more difficult areas in Linux when you are just starting out. But it's a great way to learn.
