RealPlayer on linux ?
 

Hello,

I have tried to install RealPlayer, but I obtained the following mistake, and I don't understand it:

error: Failed dependencies:
lsb >= 3.1 is needed by RealPlayer-11.0.1.1056-20081001
/bin/sh is needed by RealPlayer-11.0.1.1056-20081001
RESULT=1

I have downloaded the rpm package of RealPlayer for linux
and have tried to install it with KPackage (I am using Slackware, KDE).

I am not sure whether RealPlayer is the best one for linux, but I wanted to listen to BBC and I think they provide options for Windows Media player, and RealPlayer, so I decided to install it. When I try listening, gxine automatically appear, but it doesn't do anything. I will be happy to get some suggestions what to do. Thank you.

Do you have lsb installed?

Not sure what type of stream the BBC uses, but you may want to try using the mplayer-plugin. Can play many, many different filetypes. And if you wanted to change which program a certain file type opens with, you could try going to Edit -> Preferences -> Applications, and change the "Action"

I didn't have lsb installed (I didn't know what lsb is), thank you.

I downloaded and tried to install lsb. I've downloaded LSB Application Testkit (there are also SDKs, but I don't need them, right ?)
There are different .tar.gz files for LSB 3.2. The difference is in what id written in the brackets in the their names:

LSB 3.2 Application Testkit (IA32)
LSB 3.2 Application Testkit (IA64)
LSB 3.2 Application Testkit (PPC32)
... etc.

I have (randomly) chosen and downloaded LSB 3.2 Application Testkit (IA64), and when I try install it, I get the message:
"There may have been problems with the package installation. "

When I looked at the error-log.txt file, there was the following information there:

I had no idea what the things in the brackets meant (IA32), (IA64), (PPC32) , etc. Now I see this is a name for an architecture. What exactly does this means and how do I understand which file I need to download? I suppose I haven't downloaded the right file.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Itanium - ia64 means its a 64 bit architecture instead of the common 32.
If you have pentium or the following pentiums, it's a 32 architecture - i586 or i386 is what you need to look for.
If you have a different processor tell us.

Downloading the player

You can download RealPlayer 11 for Linux from http://www.real.com/linux.
Using the Installer

* Ensure that the .bin file you downloaded is executable. You can make the .bin file executable by running the "chmod a+x RealPlayer11(your file name).bin" command from a terminal window.
* Execute the .bin file by typing ./RealPlayer11GOLD.bin. It will provide you with several prompts and will walk you through the installation.
* After copying the files to the Mozilla plugins directory restart mozilla, and look at "about:plugins" in mozilla to check that they are being loaded. It should look like this:


Use the file name of the file you downloaded

RealPlayer installation doesn't always succeed. Some audio cards and motherboard combination are either not supported or difficult to get to work properly.

Installing mplayer or xine could be an alternative. Extending xine with the non-free codecs from the Livna repository can make a lot of audio and video formats work.

The BBC may stream to you formed for Realplayer, but you can listen with Mplayer or vlc. I used SMplayer to listen to the World Service and to drama on Radio 4 (Mplayer with another front end) but grew tired of waiting through a buffering delay before it played, so I now use vlc. Vlc will also play Windows audio stream. How to get these installed and working in Slackware I do not know, as I use SUSE 11.0 and benefit from the work of others in its automated installation process.
