Really really newbie
 

So, is there any site that really explains the basics? Or can one of you guys just tell me some key thing I need to know. I know just a bit about linux, but never have had the chance to work with it. I will be intalling it on a dell P1 100, 64 mb ram, a 20 gig HD, Ge Force One (or less), a really good sound card and system, and I plan on overclocking.( I am good at that)

two people here called spongebob? i saw that toon the other day actually, pretty good. anyway, there are loads of starte guides around, some on my sig below... i want to point out though...

1) you have a pentium 100. this is NOT a P4 2.4Ghz system, it will SUCK generally. if you think linux is running slow, blame the hardware. don't even think about doing anything that fancy like using kde or gnome.

2) don't call yourself a hacker unless you actually know what a hacker is....

I would suggest you start with reading lots from some good doc sites, such as TLDP (see my sig).

I am a "reformed" hacker, and I still play little pranks.

right, so you don't know what a hacker is then. fair enough.

Im very new to this forum & i've read this some of your posts. Now don't take this the wrong way but basically....you are very rude. Every post of yours i've read is full on unnecessary comments. I mean, so what if the guys nick is "spongebobhacker" ??!?! Does he have to be a hacker to use this ? At the end of the day, who cares ?!

I would have thought that being a moderator of a "Linux Questions" forum that you would have a lot more patience than you do. You don't seem to be able to answer any "linux questions" without having a pop at the original poster.

No doubt that you will come back with more unnecessary comments but so be it. I've said my piece.

Don't blame acid 'cause he is right; IANAL but hacker isn't a cracker, freaker or pranker, or anybody else who snoops and stalks other ppl through use of computers or any other means, in any case, if something isn't clear look up a dictionary.

Im not blaming him for anything. Im simply saying that on a Linux Questions forum, people with the most knowledge (i.e. Moderators) need to have the patience & understanding to answer those questions. Responding with sarcastic insults just puts people off getting advice here when they have problems.

You'll find soon that acid is very informative and that is just how he is ( one of the many reasons he is a moderator). Once you've been around, you get use to it and see why he is, lets say, more aggressive.
But from his first reply, that wasn't that bad. He mentioned his name and thought the toon was cool, that's it. What's so bad about that ? And the hacker part, he's just defending what the real term of hacker means.

But don't take things too seriously at times. And its alright when members post unecessary comments when replying, just as long as they give an answer as well. When someone is seeking an answer and then someone replies not helping them in any way, that is when its useless and wasn't necessary to post.

ummm.... I am a hacker, at least i was. I now only play pranks at shool, and once and again a few big companies. Nothing evil, just putting folders on my friends desktop like, "(friends name) Porn Folder" and such.

Now, you see, this is where all the confusion lies. You're saying that you used to be a hacker, but in our common terms, hacker means someone that writes programs. What you'd be would be a cracker. Now, I think that we can perhaps get on with things?

it gets very frustrating when a bunch of dumb 15 year olds enjoy referring to themselves as hackers just because they found a passkey for Quake Arena. I am a hacker, i.e. I write programs for fun, without any real planning or formal specifications.

I think the term may well realte from an analogy of someone hacking through a field of corn of something. flailing around with a sickle he knows what he's doing, but doing it his own way. as ooposed to a software design house, who would just get 10 combine harversters and do it all very neatly. hmm, maybe not.
