really new to linux
 
Hi guys im really new to linux as in today is the first day ive installed it let alone seen it ever and i need some help. Ive installed smooth wall and at the login screen when it first comes up i typed in root which was fine but then it came up with [root@smoothwall root]#

i have no idea what this mean or what to type and any help would be greatly appreciated. im a total novice:scratch:

You should have created user and logged into that account. The root account is for administration.

Does anything happen if you type startx?

you just fouund yourself in the command line, not a good place for a newbie unless you want to learn linux terminal commands immediately. (type after the # free and that will show how much RAM and SWAP you are using. )My suggestion would be to download (for free, of course)Fedora (http://fedora.redhat.com) or Mandrake or even buying Suse. These distros would be of greatest interest for you and make learning linux alot easier.

Smoothwall is a distribution of Linux made to be used as a router/firewall.
If you have it set up as your home network gateway and you configured it correctly the first time you can do most stuff by "IPaddress_of_Smoothwall:81" in a web browser of another computer on the home network.
