Ready to Start
Hi everybody, I have my thread (linux back up server) in the server forum however that is a more specific question. I would like to ask here what type of linux I should install.
I have some knowledge of linux from using Ubuntu at university but there are just so many out there I don't know what to choose! I would like to use the box as a back up server for windows computers on my LAN, I don't really know if that makes a difference. I obviously think Ubunutu but I've also been reccommended Centos. My box is up and running and I'm ready to go Linux, I just need help deciding which exact one. Many thanks Forg |
Sticking with Ubuntu would be a good idea. You are already relatively familiar with it and jumping from one distro to another while still learning Linux is a bad idea most of the time. Many new users do that in the hopes that one distribution will miraculously make everything work out of the box, ratter than fixing a small problem they had to eventually face.
If you don't want to run Ubuntu Desktop as a server, you could also try to download and install the Ubuntu server edition, found at their download page. Regards! |
Hey Mega Man, thank you for your advise!
What would be the difference, I would see, running the Server version? This whole server thing is completly new to me so I have no idea what to expect, i'm just doing it for the experience! It can't be that much different to a desktop approach? Thanks again Forg |

ahhh i see! I think I shall stick with desktop version, just for those desperate times when my new CLI skills don't work and it would be so much simpler to point and click!
Thanks a lot for your help, I shall get Ubuntu desktop installed and have some fun. Thanks again for your help Forg |
