Reading .jpeg / .gif / or any image file in C in Linux

Hello everybody,

How do I read any image file and display it over the entire screen in C in Linux?

Of course, I am searching over the net. But I am not getting any good help. Some site says use ImageMagick API. Some say use X Window System Programming. What should I do? And which one will be the best.

Thanks in advance.
Regards

I've used ImageMagick and found it easy to use. I can imagine that working directly with X would be non-trivial.
