read-only file system?
 

sorry for the stupid question... but i'm 4 days linux old. Running mandrake 10 with kde

Yesterday, I was able to read-write-view with all my user accounts on my /mnt/win_d/My Documents but today it says it is a read-only file system when i try to mkdir on it.... Even when I'm root!! the permissions seem to be all fine and i can't understand why i can't change the info on the disk anymore..

Please help

What is the output from the mount command (no args... just type mount then enter)

And what are the contents of /etc/fstab

These who things will help us figure out what is going on, thanks.

thanx a lot for your time... I guess i was a lil' quick on the asking.. After all i decided to reformat my partition in a linux style to complete my transition from windows 2k. Thanx very much for you concern

Are you sure you could write?? I know for my self as I just did it, was to make a fat32 partition first and use that drive as a read/write/view that both win/linux could use. I know I could view and read, but not write untill I made that partition that both OS's could understand. I'm using Mandrake 10 Official..

actually yeah... i downloaded stuff from the internet with linux and saved them on /mnt/win_d/My Documents

don't know how i did it though....(i'm real new to this)

How could you make a partition they both understood?
what type did you choose and what mount point should i choose?

I made my partition in windows, using Partition Magic. Its pretty easy using that program. And a fat32 partition is one that both understand. Maybe thats the file system that you were allready using..not sure. I'm using NTFS in windowsXP and I just made a 2gig. fat32 partition and now I have a new drive that both understand and I'm able to read/write/edit/add/delete and whatever else I might want to do, thats shared by Linux and windows....But just in that drive!!
