Re-install Kubuntu 8.10 without losing updates or disactivate/remove drivers&software

Hello folks,
I recently installed Kubuntu 8.10 and I am obviously an apprentice in Linux workings. Audio and video were not functioning but I knew I'd have loads to download anyway (i.e. nvidia, audigy and wireless drivers). Anyway, after completing various installations and a reboot - Kubuntu failed to install and I got a screen telling me that
'fsck died with exit status 4' - so a manual fsck is required.
The root filesystem is in read-only mode at this point.
Ok - after saying no to cloning of files and yes to fix, another message tells me to press CTRL-D to start maintenance shell. This does not work but automatically rebooted.
This time the Kubuntu splash showed the bar fully loaded but then I got a kinit? message about the image being incorrect (I can't remember the exact wording). The login and password are shown but even though I can log in, nothing happens.
Q). If I decide to re-install Kubuntu, will all internet updates be lost?
Q). Is it possible to remove (or preferably) disactivate the activated nvidia driver?
Sorry there's so much going on in all that, I really didn't know which of the problems to use as a title thread.
Thanking you in advance and anxiously looking forward to some positive feedback from experienced Linux users.
Paul

If you do a clean install yes you loose youŕe internet updates

It depends on what you still can do with you're system
But normally Ubuntu has as we call it a failsafe mode or recovery mode is it working or not

Did you check youŕe media before installing ?
Did you use the LIVE CD or a install media ?

Thank you for such a quick response.
Well, the system will not boot up. I cannot open Kubuntu at all.
After the Kubuntu splash screen (incidentally the loading bar seems to load everything) I see a black screen with login and password. I fill in my details but this seems to be read-only mode, because after that I cannot actually access anything.
I was hoping to be able to access the drivers and uninstall them, then reboot and see if that was the problem.

After Grub is loading normally Ubuntu gives you two boot options
1) The normal boot
2) Generic or recovery mode
With the second option we can try to repair the system.
Did you only have one boot option ?
