re-install

well after the boatloads of help i received for my last post http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...hreadid=186355 i thought i would change my tact.
as i have absolutely no idea what packages were deleted other than everything i need to gui update. and as i have no idea what files to replace i was wondering if a re-install would be the go?
and would it overwrite all my settings and would i lose my emails, mp3s, whatever else?

Identify where all the things are you want to save and off load them before you reinstall (zip drive, cd-r, network). Most likely they are in your /home/<username> if you created a normal account for your everyday use, or in your /root directory if not. A reinstall will certainly clear your drive if it includes a format.

if i have the mandrake cd in the drive when i reboot it asks if i want to upgrade or install.
if i install is there any way i can do so without formatting?

I don't have any experience with mandrake, but I'd do a backup just in case. Maybe ask over in the Madrake forum on this and they'd be able to offer some guidance.

Since you have abandoned your earlier thread, I am closing it. You have decided, after waiting for a little over 8 hours, that your thread was not being answered. I would like to remind you that this forum has users from all over the world - many of our members will not have seen your post yet. Etiquette states that you wait 24 hours and then, if no one answers, bump your post up by replying to it with further information.

Also vanishing Configuration menu items after updating new install of Mandrake 10.0

http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...hreadid=186355

Greetings XavierP, visxera and everyone else,

I recently had to reinstall Mandrake 10.0 Official on a hard drive of mine.

After performing the updating via System > Configuration > Packaging > Install Software route ( though I had to spend an hour or so getting the right order of updates so that they would install { not bitching, it is very cool to update so easily, even if it requires a little user attention ... } ), everything installed and I was able to shutdown.

I rebooted ( I know, I know - an old Windows habit ... gotta set those electrons, ya know ... ) and found that I too had lost the Configuration > Packaging and Configuration > Configure Computer menu items ...

Oddly enough, the only google board post close was the one above, which would indicate to me that it might be system specific ( though an Iwill mobo with an AMD Athlon does not sound too exotic ... ) or a very very obvious solution ( to everyone else ).

I know there is a workaround for it ... remember this happening previously and resolving it.

I would appreciate someone chiming in with the solution.

Enjoy,

Michael

And yes XavierP , affero is a great way to show thanks
