re: equalizing sounds

Hello All:

I've just about finished my migration from winstuff to linstuff.
I've started playing my mp3 but lo and listen, one of my speakers just went zap and up and died on me.
I'd like to check to make sure it's dead.
So where do I go for equalizing sound?
The light of the speaker is working and sometimes the sound comes back on, but then goes off again.
I'd like to fix this problem.

I'm using rh 7.3 w/ kde on the desktop, and an emulated scsi cdrw (hdc=ide_scsi) that doubles as my player.

Thanks,

If you use XMMS for mp3 playback, it has a volume slider as well as a balance slider (left to right speaker).
