.rar to .avi

I feel sort of bad asking so many questions but i figured the faster i learn all of this, the faster ill have the smarts to help other people.

this should be an easy one i hope.

i have a few movie files on my computers that were just folders filled with .rar folders.

what is the easiest way to convert said folders to .avi files, (all of them into one .avi folder

Install rar or unrar for Linux and use that command:

for rar in `find -name *.rar` ; do unrar e $rar ; done

To install unrar in Ubuntu you need the Multiverse Repository enabled (there are patent reasons why it is not included in the default distributions). Likewise, some of the other distros may have it in a non-standard repository.

When you are extracting movie files, they will generally be a collection of files (eg ".r01", ".r02", etc, being split up to help downloading). Just ignore these, and from a terminal command line, run unrar on the main '.rar' file. It will automatically grab all the pieces and put them together.

rar is an archive file format, just like zip or tar. There is no guarantee that the rar content is a video file at all. Basically you need to unpack (aka extract) the data from the rar archive file, and do the video conversion, if it is a video file at all.
