Question Radeon Installation Issues

I'm trying to get 3d acceleration working on my Radeon 8500 DV video card. I'm trying to get the ati.2 drivers working using instructions from GATOS and http://www.reades.com/radeon.html.

I'm working on the ati.2 drivers now that I've downloaded from through CVS. They need an XFree86 tree, so I downloaded the tree from the CVS there too. I'm trying to make the ati.2 drivers but I'm getting errors. First I do xmkmf ../xc and that works fine. When I try the make command I get errors. After a bit, these errors get printed out before the command ends:

Code:
In file included from atioption.h:29,
from ati.c:85: ../xc/programs/Xserver/hw/xfree86/common/xf86str.h:21:21: xf86Pci.h:
No such file or directory In file included from atioption.h:29,
from ati.c:85: ../xc/programs/Xserver/hw/xfree86/common/xf86str.h:852: parse error
before "IOADDRESS" ../xc/programs/Xserver/hw/xfree86/common/xf86str.h:852:
warning: no semicolon at end of struct or union ..
/xc/programs/Xserver/hw/xfree86/common/xf86str.h:916: parse error before '}' token
../xc/programs/Xserver/hw/xfree86/common/xf86str.h:916: warning: type defaults to
`int' in declaration of `ScrnInfoRec' ..
/xc/programs/Xserver/hw/xfree86/common/xf86str.h:916: ISO C forbids data
definition with no type or storage class make: *** [ati.o] Error 1
What is causing these errors? I've tried the XFree86 tree from binaries and from CVS but the same thing still happens. I read in a discussion somewhere on these forums that I should use XFree86 source for my distro---where would I find source for Mandrake 9.1?

I'm thinking DRI isn't working right on my computer. The How-To at http://www.reades.com/radeon.html says that glxgears should show a framerate above 300fps, and i'm only getting 200-250fps.

I'd really appreciate help from anyone here who has any idea about my problems. Thanks in advance.

System info:
OS: Mandrake 9.1
Video card: Radeon 8500DV
XFree86 version: 4.3

My educated guess is that you're trying to
build a driver that's meant for XFree 4.2
on a system with 4.3 installed?

Gatos explicitly tells you NOT
to go try an mix ;)

If the CVS is for XFree86 4.2, is there anywhere where I can get the source for ati.2 for Xfree86 4.3?

/me raises one brow and coughs ...

I didn't check CVS for you (can't due to the lack
of a socks-server), but...

Did you look here, mate?

I just thought the CVS was for 4.2 because that's what I used and you said that could be the reason for my error.

I've checked that download page but there are no source files for the ati.2 drivers, just the drm-kernel drivers (as far as I can tell, anyway).

Thanks for your help again.

There's a link for the ati.2 drivers for XFree86 4.3.0, but it's just the drivers and no source. I've tried installing them but they haven't fixed my problem. I was originally using the CVS because it said that I should use them for some extra functionality, but it doesn't seem to work (they needed to be compiled or whatever, so I was just looking for a version in a similar state that would work with my software). However, my DRI problems could be from something else other than the ati.2 drivers, so I think I'll try fiddling around with that stuff instead.

Thanks again for all your help!

If anyone reads this that has worked on similar problems, I would still appreciate some advice.
