Radeon 9800 Install

I have two computers, One PC has a Via KT266A chipset, the other is a VIa KT600 chipset. I did a test install of my Radeon 9800 card on my KT266A pc by following this article to the T. http://www.rage3d.com/content/articl...00000000000000

It worked no problem, I was able to get 3d acceleration. However When i did the exact same thing with my KT600 chipset PC I got very poor performance with 3d acceleration. I was using the 2.4.22-10 kernel for compilation with both pcs. Do I need to try a newer kernel for the newer pc? I wish ATI would take a lesson from Nvidia and make their drivers as easy to install as them.
