radeon 9600 problems w/ mandrake 9.2

Hi I'm new to linux so I'm a pretty big newb. When i first installed mandrake 9.2 it recognized my sapphire 9600 pro and gave it the Xserver driver "Radeon(fglrx)". problem is that when the X server tries to start with this driver it says "No screens found" or "Screens found but none of them have a usable configuration". The ONLY driver that works is the generic VESA driver, which uses the MESA? implementation of openGL, which is extremely slow. Anyways, i downloaded the 9600 linux driver from ATI.com, and when i tried to install the RPM, it said it conflicts with another file, which i guessing its because i already have a hardware-accelerated driver for my 9600 on the system. If I use a generic radeon or ati driver it doesnt work. Someone plz help im tryin to make the switch:(

OK, to install the driver from ATI you have to use "rpm -ivh --force nameofrpm.platform.rpm" It's because the opengl file from the driver conflicts with the mesa one, or something wierd like that. Just do it with the --force option and then continue normally. (ie, fglrxconfig)
