quick resolution question

i was wondering, does a resolution of 1280x1024 stretch the screen width on a normal CRT monitor? ive been messing around with resolutions and all kinds of settings, and now when i change the screen res to 1280x1024 and try to view .jpg's, they appear stretched.

This is a standard 4:3 resolution, see:

It (1280x1024) is a common resolution used on 4:3 monitors. But it isn't 4:3. I guess a lot of people don't mind a little distortion.

1280 = 256 * 5
1024 = 256 * 4

1280x1024 is a 5:4 resolution.

i found this page with test patterns to adjust the aspect ratio of 1280x1024 of my screen, to that of 1024x764 (so that images arnt stretched).

http://www.tigerdave.com/test_patterns.htm

i get black bars on the left and right of the screen, but it seems to work.
