quick question w/ xmms

i installed xmms and it works just fine playing audio if i load a playlist/directory, etc. i've been trying to find out how to set things to automatically open mp3s from konqueror in xmms (like when you click on the files), but to no avail. i tried changing the file associations for mp3s, but that doesn't seem to work. any suggestions?

There should be two ways. in Konqueror, right click on the MP3 file and select open with, enter xmms in the command line, and then select 'Remember application associated with this type of file'.

Also, in preferences, file associations, is mp3 under application and well as audio? In mine, for example, ogg is under audio, but chaging that one does nothing. It was the one under application type ogg that defined the association. I imagine it goes in preferences, looking though all, then application, then subsections. Find the one that just had xmms added and make sure it is the first in the list.

i've tried both of these things, but for whatever reason it still opens mp3s with mpg123. should i remove mpg123? i've also tried to install a front end for mpg123 (apollo) because mpg123 works, but i've run into a problem getting tmake installed. this then screws things up with installation of apollo, a.k.a. i have to set $QTDIR and don't know exactly how to go about it. further suggestions?

For me the file type was
x-mp3
(in konqueror 2.2.1).
From that time I associated xmms with x-mp3 files, mp3s are always open by xmms when left-clicked.

that's what i've done, i've got Xmms as the program at the top of my list for programs to use to open file type .blah (here blah=mp3 or x-mpeg3). it still plays the stuff using mpg123 and gives no graphical interface. communism! help me contain?

If you remove mpg123 as a valid app to run MP3s under x-mp3 (both application and audio), but Konqueror still opens MP3s with it, you need to look at mpeg and see if mp3 is a valid mime type for it. It could be something as simple as mpeg coming alphabetically before mp3. The answer is there, hidden in your mime types somewhere. I don't have mpg123, but it probably installs and overrites itself as the mime type for various file types.
