Quick question about Window Managers

Over the past few days,I've been experimenting with various Linux distros. So far I've tried Fedora3, Damn Small Linux, Ubuntu, and now Mepis on my Celeron 1.5Ghz, 512mb RAM laptop.

So far, I love the applications/games/utilities included with Mepis, but the KDE interface seems bloated to me. I like the simple desktop of Ubuntu/Fedora, but they are kinda bare compared to Mepis. Finally, I love the pure speed of DS Linux.

Being new to the Linux, I'm still learning the ropes. I keep hearing that I can change Window Managers at the drop of a hat, but it's still not clear to me as to limitations to what I can and can't do.

The information at the Xwinman.org site was helpful, but it leaves me still wondering.

Specifically, I know KDE/Gnome/XCFE are desktop evironments and Blackbox/IceWM/etc. are Window Managers. Is it possible to replace one with the other?

For example, I'd like to take my current install of Mepis and replace the KDE desktop and replace it with something more streamlined, like Blackbox or Fluxbox. Is that even possible? By doing that, will I lose any of the applications currently running on the KDE?

You can use any Window/Desktop manager you like with any Linux distribution. I mean it, any ;)

You don't like reading over what you wrote, do you? :-p

I don't think that is possible, and I have been looking into the layout managers as well. I personally like GNOME way better than KDE, just because KDE reminds me of windows ME, it is just a bunch of extra stuff that you don't need (though the explorer is MUCH better than nautilous). I am just a :newbie: myself, however, so you shouldn't trust me :-D

EDIT: I misunderstood you question, I thought you meant you wanted to replace like IceWM with KDE or something :D my mistake. But yeah, you can use ANY linux manager with ANY linux distro.

Thanks for the help.

Basically, I'm wanting to replace the standard KDE (too bloated IMHO) with a "light" WM like Blackbox or Fluxbox and still maintain all the applications/games included in the Mepis install like Konqueror, Kmail, etc.

Would I noticed an increase in performance using BB/Fluxbox over the K Desktop Environment?

I need to do a whole lot more :study:

You certainly would notice a performance increase, you should go disable any services you don't need running but that's something you can do later :) Just install fluxbox and you should be able to select it when you login if all goes right. And yes you will have access to Konqueror and Kmail and whatever other K* apps you want :)
