Quick explanation of ftp virtual users

Hello,

I am setting up a vsftbd server on my ubuntu 11.04 server machine.

There is some documentation on virtual users, and I just want to make sure I am clear on the subject...

A virtual user is a user that vsftpd knows about, but one who is not an "actual" user on the system itself. In essence, this user can ftp into the system, but that should be the only access they can have (no webserver is running).

Am I correct?

Thanks

The docs refer to virtual users and anonymous users in the same paragraph, so I think you are correct.

This paragraph appears to support your conclusion:

Quote:

virtual_use_local_privs: If enabled, virtual users will use the same privileges as local users. By default, virtual users will use the same privileges as anonymous users, which tends to be more restrictive (especially in terms of write access).
Frankly, I think "remote users" would have been a clearer term, all other things being equal.
