quick connect to internet in mandrake?
 

HI there all,

OK, this is a really basic question, so, ahem, here I go anyway:

The only way I can find to connect to the internet in my mandrake 9.2 is to go through the Welcome icon -this computer - give root passwd - then in Networks & Internet, click on "connect." It connects just fine, but...

There's got to be an easier way,this is very cumbersome and not good if I am surfing as root!

Can't find anything in the manual etc... What am I missing, can someone point the way?

What kind of connection do you use? Modem, cable modem, DSL?

OOps sorry I forgot to specify, I'm connecting with an external modem; which happily Mandrake detected just fine.

There must be a way to put an icon on the desktop that lets you connect and surf or check email with just a click. Is this something I have to customize, and if so, what is the program?

kppp is a good app that comes with mandrake 9.2. If its already installed it should be under Networking-Remote Access-kppp in you applications menu. If it isnt installed use the package manager to install it. You should already have all the info you need from when you set up the connection in the control center.
kppp is pretty easy to set up. Shouldnt need any command line.

Also, when you get your connection set up how you like it (not having to enter a password, etc...) you can make a shortcut to whatever app you are using by right clicking on an empty space on your desktop then following "create new" - "link to application" then pick the "execute" tab, then "browse" to /usr/bin You will probably find your app in there, just select it , the rest is pretty self explanatory.
