I was wondering if there are any antivirus or anti spyware programs for linux and if it is even neccesary. I just read a few articles about viruses for linux/unix but both stated that the possability of getting a virus for linux is very small. Also, were would be a good place to start as far as learning about linux and how it works and how to use it properly? Any feedback would help!

Sort of. Most Linux based virus checkers look for Windows viruses.
As long as you don't log on as the root user, viruses can't install themselves in Linux. The root user account is intended for setup and infrequent config file adjustments. Always use a non-root user account for regular computer use.
I found the Red Hat 9 Linux Bible by Negus useful. He has also written Bibles for Fedora Core and perhaps other distros.
