Question regarding USB live install of Kali Linux

Hi I'm completely new to Linux and just installed Kali Linux as I'm reading a book on pen testing. I installed it off a 4GB USB flash pen drive and I was wondering how storing files and programs works? Can I keep using it on the USB or should I now install it as a dual-boot so that I have more space? I'm guessing it can only use the space on the USB stick as I didn't partition my hard-drive. Thanks in advance.

Welcome!
First, some more information may be helpful. I can only assume that you are booting to the usb stick and you are running the OS live from the usb.
You will not be able to save your work to the usb stick unless you formed a persistence partition when you set up the live usb stick ( a little info on that using LinuxLive USB Creator). If you did not select for persistence you will not save your work each time you reboot. Also, A 4GB stick is rather small to have the OS and much space for storage.
You can easily setup your machine to dual boot both Linux and Windows, if you like,or try installing Linux to a Virtual Machine. There are many articles and tutorials on these subjects. Just google them and if you get hung up repost a pointed question with details like hardware, Linux version, etc.. Most of all have fun. You will learn a ton with some patience.

Regards.

i take it you did read the WARNING that the development team posted on that issue

http://docs.kali.org/introduction/sh...use-kali-linux
in the section
"Is Kali Linux Right For You?"

As the distribution developers, one would likely expect us to recommend that everyone use Kali Linux. The fact of the matter is however, that Kali is a Linux distribution specifically geared towards professional penetration testing and security auditing and as such, it is NOT a recommended distribution for those unfamiliar with Linux.

In addition, misuse of security tools within your network, particularly without permission, may cause irreparable damage and result in significant consequences.
If you are looking for a Linux distribution to learn the basics of Linux and need a good starting point, Kali Linux is not the ideal distribution for you. You may want to begin with Ubuntu or Debian instead.
the significant consequences.
normally involve standing in front of a judge

but if you must then
are you a 2d year CS major , or better
you WILL need the equivalent of a 4 year degree
or have a ton of network exp and coding in
perl,python ruby!!!!!!!! and GO
kali uses a lot of "gems"

if the usb thumb drive is 16 gig or better , that is more than enough room

but using it on a thumb drive will be very slow - very slow .

the high-bread iso image can be very easily installed to the usb using "dd"

a VM like kvm on suse and rhel works fine BUT
and this is a VERY BIG ONE !!!
!!! NO nvidia CUDA support !!!
and that is a big issue

a dual boot to the hard drive is a good option
kali only takes up less than 12 gig fully loaded
