Post Question: Does the MBR still occupy the first 512 KB on new computers?

CORRECTION: Does the MBR still occupy the first 512 bytes.
I want to backup my computer's OS. It has Windows Vista, and it doesn't come with a recovery disk. My disk drive has a partition on it which will restore the OS to some known state, but I think that is useless if my disk drive crashes. What do you recommend backing up my computer onto so that I can restore its OS without having to go out and purchase a copy of Windows Vista?

P.S. This is my first Post.

The MBR is in the first 512 bytes, though I'm not sure what relation that has to the rest of your question.

As for the recovery partition, it's much more likely that Windows will fail and need to be re-imaged via the recovery partition than it is that the drive will suffer some physical damage or failure that prevents you from accessing it.

New computers rarely come with recovery discs anymore. If you really want one, the manufacturer will usually supply it though.

Thank you. I really want to back-up my computer files before having to re-image it. What do you recommend? This is my first Post and I entered the wrong value in the title.
