Question about Mint updates after install from Live CD

I have installed Mint using the Live CD. The school's network isn't the best and I'm having trouble getting all the updates downloaded. Everyone in class is eating up bandwidth. I also noticed the the other 2 guys who chose Mint as their distro are having troubles with the updates as well.

My questions -
Can you use the Mint DVD to update the install done from the live CD?
We had to use the Live CD because the computers in the classroom only had CD drives.

If that is not possible then can you download all the updates (202 updates, 110 MB worth) to a file and update from the file? I was thinking of downloading all the updates at home and bringing them with me on a USB drive to class next week.

1 last question a bit off the main subject -
I have Mint running in VMware at home and I cannot get the VMware tools to install. I have them extracted to a folder on the desktop and I run the line from the terminal window and nothing seems to happen. I installed from the Live CD and I'm missing some updates that will allow the Visual Effects to work and I think I may need to get the VMware tools installed before I update the OS.

I'm pretty new to Linux. I've only used the Ubuntu Live CD to access unresponsive windows desktops, so please be gentle!

a few points here:-

Quote:

with Mint10 live_cd - there is a option to upgrade to the DvD version, in the start_help screen that is displayed upon a reboot or restart.
- that's probably most of the 110Mb updates.

use APTonCD ( menu-> accessories-> aptoncd )
Google it 1st, to see how it works.
- from my experience, it doesn't copy all the available files in synaptic, but seems to do most of them.
- use it to make a cd @ home, then take that to school & update the school's PC, using that disk. Do your friend(s) PC too.

Finally, yet another way:-
do the updates more gradually - use the Mint update menu, to de-select
any L3 updates, as there is usually lots of them, & do only the L1 & L2 updates.
you could, permantly leave L3 de-selected, if you wished to. this won't effect Mint too greatly, but you won't have the latest updates to the available apps.

I use virtualbox to test any new O/Ss. ( available in ubuntu)
it too, has a guest tools ad-on, mainly to get a better screen resolution.
as well as a few other usefull add-ons.

Thanks for the suggestions!

I'll look into the APTonCD.
