question about backup software and Active directory
 

Hey i need some consultant of my protect and i don't know if i am going on the right direction white my backup sulution i have came up myself of my own reasearch.

I needed a good stable and easy to use free backup solution system that supported windows and linux. I crost a program called bacula and it lookt pretty easy back then to get it up and running. but on the moment after 2 weeks of fighting i am not still have it up running on my debian server.

Sow my question is that is there a better program than bacula to backup windows and linux computers that are easy to set up and maintain and have a good support. That's important becuse i have only been in the linux world and feels like on the moment that only help you are getting are forums and mr. google if you are lucky.



And my second question is that i have consider another project to put up when i am done white the backup solution to run the Active directory on a linux machine. Sow what good distribution that have graphical interface easy to set up easy to maintain and have a good support. I all ready know that Active directoring is possible on the Ubuntu server but that's only command line only, and i don't want to type every thing in every time i change password och unlock account and sow on.

I do not know how easy or difficult bacula or any other program is. This only relevant with personal choices. So something that is difficult for you can be not as difficult for someone else. You can also use Amanda for the same. But it still depends how comfortable you are with Linux and commands and editing files.
On your second issue of configuring Linux as PDC, you have some support with SAMBA. Not just Ubuntu, but any major distribution will support the same. All you need to know is how to do it. But if you are handling windows clients, windows server for Active directory is better with far more options on handling clients. If you are just looking for basic authentication and authorisation for network resources, SAMBA can help, but on the other hand, if you want more granular control, windows is what you are looking at.

Hmm maybe my main problem is that only been using Linux for proximity 3 weeks sow. Sow have been using windows for since i have been a child that's why that world if easy to me to understand. On the moment feels like i have to learn everything from scratch again how everything work installing and sow on. PDC is same thing as samba? sorry for my delayd answer on this matter

Linux is NOT windows. So you will need to learn Linux the way you learned windows the first time. PDC is a primary domain controller or AD server in your windows domain. SAMBA is a package or a software that you will need if you want to configure Linux machine to act as a domain controller.

Yeah i know that windows is not Linux and doesn't have almost nothing incommon. but i curious how stuff are different and work in Linux to get a better picture what is best to use and what is good to test out. are you cable of getting PDC grafical?

I'm guessing he meant. Are you capable of getting PDC graphical? In other words is there a gui to do stuff to the PDC.

What are your needs when you say PDC? What control are you looking for? Just authentication and authorization of network resources? Or something more granular? It will depend on your needs. And if you are looking for GUI, I do not know if there exists anything for PDC. But you can use GUI for managing Samba server. Or else you can use appliances for PDC like TurnKeyLinux PDC if you want. Those are easy to manage and maintain. But it will only do one thing and you may not be able to use your machine for anything else.

Sorry for not being pres sis what i was meaning. that what i wanted was to graphically able to administer users and computers as in win 2003. see picture bellow. Meaning that i want to add computers and user and administer them through that. And yes i have need of authentication and authorization of network resources.
