Question about avahi

I am new to Linux and have a question about avahi. I believe I can configure avahi to have my Linux box come up with a Local Link IP address. My question is once my Linux box comes up can I change the given Local Link IP to something else.

The reason avahi comes up with a local link address is because you can do that with zero configuration (hence the name, zeroconf). Avahi discovers the local network and accesses it, that capability, however, is limited to the local network.
Perhaps if I knew what you wanted to do and why I could help you more.

I would like to use avahi to bring my Linux box up with a Local Link IP. However I do not want to run on the Local Link network (169.254.0.0/16). I would like this Linux box to somehow (without operator intervention) receive an IP address of a different network and use that new IP address from now on.

Is there anything in avahi that would allow this Linus box to request an IP address from some type of box (server) that is already on the correct network.

Avahi is basically multicast domain name service using UDP packets. It doesn't actually poll your IP address from the DHCP server,
I'd think you'd have better luck looking at inetd.
