Introduction to Linux - A Hands on Guide
This guide was created as an overview of the Linux Operating System, geared toward new users as an exploration tour and getting started guide, with exercises at the end of each chapter.
For more advanced trainees it can be a desktop reference, and a collection of the base knowledge needed to proceed with system and network administration. This book contains many real life examples derived from the author's experience as a Linux system and network administrator, trainer and consultant. They hope these examples will help you to get a better understanding of the Linux system and that you feel encouraged to try out things on your own.

I'm (sort of) new to Linux, and I'm going to be installing Mandrake Linux 10.1 (Official) on my PC sometime this week.
I've had Mandrake Linux 10.0 (Community) installed on this PC before, and all of my hardware works great.
Except for my modem.
Now, I've got a Lucent Win Modem. I was able to get it working in Mandrake 10 Community after messing with it for who knows how long. But this time around, I think I'm just going to see about picking up a new modem.
Which modem would you recommend for Mandrake 10.1 Official? I'm thinking about picking up a Diamond SupraMax 56K Fax PCI modem (provided that I can find it for sale someplace), since it's listed as "compatible" in the hardware database for Mandrake 10.1.
Now, if I were to get this modem (the one mentioned above), would the drivers be included with Mandrake 10.1 (since it's listed as compatible) or will I have to scour the internet in order to find them?
Thanks in advance to anyone who can answer my questions.
Whether to find drivers for existing modems; or buy another win modem; or go for an external modem are all valid options. In fact the options involved are the reason I llke linux. My only concern is that newbies who read this later might be misled to think there is no option and that they gotta' buy an external modem, which is not true.
However, in my case, like I'm going to carry an external modem around the western hemisphere with my Dell Inspiron 2650 laptop? No, I don't think so. Nor did I drag around an external modem for my previous laptop, the Compaq.
If you are going to use the free download Mandrake, do not be surprised if you still need to download and install modem drivers. that's what free gives you.
Several of the pay versions, such as SuSe, claim to include the drivers and they are installed as part of the installation program. I am gonna' find out.
maybe if we lookout for problems concerning winmodem, then we will find a lots of them and it is not that mandrake does not have them
so when u are going to buy a modem ,then why not lookout for somwething which will not trouble u later on
i agree that it is not that internal modems won't work
but u need to lookout for the one which will work out if u go for a diferent linuxx distro
like the HSF winmoem which works at 14.1 kbps with the free drivers available and u need to purchase the full ones to get it working full at 56 kbps
