Another homework assignment, right?

This will appear in any book on basic Linux command-line.

One good trick to learn is "man -k <keyword>". For example, try: "man -k users"

w or who would get you the TTY and w would also tell you what the foreground job is.
Code:

man w
should break down what each column is.

While we do enjoy helping people, we get frustrated at helping those who don't make an effort. Just doing a simple good search for linux + find logged in users will give you over 4 million search returns. Please post what ever attempt you have made for next time.

will do. i am attempting to find the questions first. i posted on here last week to and i did lots of searching. but thanks for helping me out guys.

You should read the LQ rules again. You stated the instructor said "to use the Internet". I'm wondering if he/she meant in a research aspect rather than a direct query as you have done here on the LQ forum.

It would be best if you did a search here on LQ or Google then present what you have done to accomplish the assignment. If you get stuck or even have something that is not clear it is best suited for you to complete the assigned task and not just fill in the blanks via a LQ post.

I suppose we need a guide on how to get help with homework.....

Here are my rules:
Use informative thread titles
Acknowledge that it is homework
Show what you have already done/tried and/or give the context of the question.
Follow-up when members ask for clarification.

jonhanna meets these criteria more that do most homework posters

Looks and sounds good to me. I can't think of anything else to add to that.

well i talked to last week about my homework then to. last week i did research and you guys gave me tips on where to find what i was looking for.since the first time i posted i have not asked for the question directly. i have about 45 questions a week and i find 99% percent of them myself. and yes one buck i told my instructor i come to this forum and he said great thats a useful site with lots of helpful people. if you dont want to help me then dont post. all i am doing is asking an occasional question which this is linux questions is it not. i appreciate the help very much but i can not control if people post the answer or where to go all i can do is ask where to find it and you guys post what you want. pixellany you have been very helpful and none of this is directed towards you. but once again if any of you do not want to help dont post.

Homework or not, you will generally get good help here if it is obvious that you are putting out some effort. The strongest reactions are directed to threads or posts which just **look like** someone taking the lazy way out.
Stick with us and you will see that we are on your side.....

Jonhanna it looks like we are being harsh and in a way we are. But take a second look. We are helping by trying to get you to help your self. That way you are just not getting answers to your questions and learning nothing. So again we are helping you just in this thread we are helping you in an indirect way. Like pixellany said, stick around and you will see. Good luck with your linux career / future / or what ever you may be doing with linux.
