Query on Installing and using programs

Hi all,

Ok so far i hope i have grasped the following:

1) extract tar.gz to local drive.(use built in tool in madrake)
2) ./configure ( to read the manual or readme before)
if errors occur. To check the errors and then install the dependencies.

3) make (this changes to binary? so that the make install will work?)
4) make install (this installs the prog?)

Please could you help with any errors i might have in the procedure above.

is there a command with ./configure that when there is an error with the dependencies it will automatically install them? have mandrake 9.2 on DVD.

thanks for your input.

Hi there snoopyswiss!

There's no such a program that will check and install dependencies after the ./configure, as far as I'm concerned. However, if you are willing to stick with .rpms though(which is wise to do when using a rpm based distro as Mandrake), Mandrake has a great tool called (g)urpmi. It goes as easy as double clicking into an rpm and Mandrake will install them for you. If dependencies are found, it will either ask for your disks or download it from an ftp.

I highly recommend you downloading the packages from the ftp instead of using the disks.. it's just more practical. Take a look in here:

http://plf.zarb.org/~nanardon/

to get started with Mandrake's urpmi and here:

http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...threadid=45094

to get a good understanding of how to install programs in Linux and finally in here:

http://rpm.pbone.net/

to find a lot of cool packages for Mandrake, including game emulators, if you are into those things

Good luck!
