Question quadra 660av debian 3.0 need opinion and help

Hi all. First post to linuxquestions.org I hope there are m68k linuxers here.

Why are the pings not working? but ssh does.

is there any chance of running X? I decided to try blackbox but haven't successfully installed x. I downloaded x files from: ftp.netbsd.org/pub/NetBSD/NetBSD-1.6.1/mac68k/binary/sets/

I plan to try getting a DNS server installed so I can name the machine to access it.

I want this system to be a linux workstation/server. I hope to use the (awfully slow) g++ compiler for programming. I want the apache webserver to be accessible on the local network. I was hoping that by having the pc connected to the internet and having a dyndns.com account I could access the linux web server. Is the only requirement having the computers on a network? will the pc need to be set up as a router?

THANKS!
-Bret

Current system details:
___________________________________________________
I now have a quadra 660av with debian 3 and have installed:
(most basic debian 3/woody)
gcc
g++
make
ssh
apache2 - not accessible from other computers

also:
built-in ethernet (MACE) does work now (today) I think booting to mac os with ethernet/open transport extensions was the fix. so on the local network I have:
192.168.0.2 - winxp
192.168.0.3 - Jaguar
192.168.0.4 - debian m68k 3.0
subnet 255.255.255.0
hub 10Mb/sec
all manually configured

but...
xp doesn't ping 0.3 or 0.4 or 0.2 but it does dial-up to isp and ssh linux.
Jaguar doesn't ping 0.2 or 0.3 ssh to linux does work.
debian doesn't ping anything but self and can't ssh to anything.
