Do you have python installed now? Is it an older version? I would try using apt-get and see what version it installs. If its an older version you could probably change your apt-get repository to something a little more bleeding edge and perhaps this will get python 2.4.

I'm wondering why you need python 2.4. Gentoo's utilities are almost entirely based in python and 2.4 hasn't been marked stable yet in the Gentoo portage tree.

Is there something in 2.4 that you can't do in 2.3 or is this a dependency thing?
